I was born and raised in Central California. I had two passions for most of my life, horseback riding and food. Riding horses and eating food comforted me from the numbness I had developed from being overweight. When I reached High School, I also reached my heaviest weight of 220 lbs. Unfortunately, High School did not leave me with many pleasant memories. I remember one day walking through the busy halls to my next class, when I accidentaly bumped into a fellow classmate. She turned to me with a look of digust and said, “Why don’t you just go eat a Twinkie?” It was at that point that I plunged deeper into the abyss of my shame and insecurities and I turned more toward my horse and favorite foods.
A few months before my High School graduation, my family decided to buy a gym membership near my home. I had no want or desire to go to a gym and be around the “gym rats” looking the way I did. I knew I needed to lose weight but I was still so numb to the emotions involving it. I did not want to face it. After I went on the family tour of the gym, I realized that it wasnt a box of perfect bodies. There were large people, small people, young people, older people and everybody in between. Seeing this gave me some hope, I wasn’t alone! Maybe this is possible!
I started with the simple things, elipticals, treadmils and basic resistance machines. I went consistently after school a few days a week with the encouragement of my family. And wouldn’t you know, after a few weeks of exercise, I lost 5 pounds! I can’t even explain that initial excitement! Although I had a long way to go, I saw the light at the end of the tunnel. The commitment and hard work was going to pay off, I just knew it. I was going to make it happen.

After a couple of months, I noticed myself not craving the junk food that I had once felt I “needed.” I now wanted less junk and more healthy food. At my Graduation, I had lost a total of 15 pounds and had never felt more proud. And that was just the beginning. I eventually got bored of the eliptical machines and attempted to run on the treadmil. At first, I could not run more than a minute or two, but I worked at it and fell in love with running. Today, running for an hour straight is just a normal day and I love every second of it! I ran my first half marathon in 2008 and have done several more since then.
